View Full Version : CVN 76 to deploy to WESTPAC soon
January 17th 07, 12:14 PM
According to the following article, USS Ronald Reagan, despite coming
back from her maiden deployment not so long ago, is going to make up
for the temporary inavailability of USS Kitty Hawk (being in
maintenance) in SE Asia:

Any ideas what would be the composition of the air wing?;-) CVW-5 or
CVW-14??? AFAIK VFA-22 is undergoing the transition to F/A-18F...

Published news is that Reagan will leave this Sat., w/ CVW-14.
Whether VFA-22 had completed transition to the F from the E isn't known
to this poster.

Seems odd that they would transition to a 2-seater... they have pretty
much been attack-oriented from the beginning, including my time there
in the A-7E.

That's the plan. CVW-14 doesn't have a F squadron assigned.
The PAO had contacted The Hook regarding the history of when did the
_last_ seat-seat outfit (i.e. F-8s <g>) transition to a two-seater.
Was it when VF-191/-194 did (to the F-4), or when VF-24/-211 did (to
the F-14)?
We had a good time with that bit of trivia research.

The days of attack and fighter communities have disappeared completely
w/ the demise of the Tomact. It's now all one big _happy_ community
called "strike".

This article: http://www.fresnobee.com/270/story/25890.html confirms
that VFA-22 is gonna deploy within CVW-14.
I've heard rumours that due to this fact VFA-22 will NOT transfer their
Echos to VFA-31 as planned, but instead VFA-31 is to receive the E's
planned for VFA-136. What is more, reportedly VFA-136 is going to
deploy again this summer (in CVW-8?), still with F/A-18C's!
Looks that Fleet Response Plan and "pool managament" of NAVAIR
squadrons finally start to make life really interesting;-)

Anyhow, there was an ugly accident on the very beginning of the
deployment...

Yep! Ramp strikes DO happen. I have a video title "No Easy Days" That
shows quite a few of them.

Tee hee....funny, from a gent(me) that seemed to deploy in the oldest
of the fleet, in 2 of 3 sea duty tours(VF-33, VF-151)...F-4s in a
world of Turkeys.

With 242 hours in type? Maybe an F-14 guy now an F-18 DH. Then again
it really could be a first-tour JO.
In only about the past five years you see whole lot of flight students
and nuggets who fit a different demographic. It's surprisingly common
to see a guy in his late 20s, married, even with one or two kids, and
some years' prior enlisted service. This is at least on the rotary-wing
side of the house (I can't speak for VFA). Weird to think that the
"light your hair on fire" single guys might go the way of the dinosaur!

I believe a double check will show that this accident was from the
_first_ deployment ...

Right! Sorry - I have been really confused by the similarity of
dates...
To answer the question about the pilot: Indeed, he was on his first F/
A-18 deployment after transition from S-3B Viking.
